Womens World Cup

WOMENS WORLD CUP

A world championship for women’s rugby union is held every four years, and it is called the Women’s Rugby World Cup. The first Women’s Rugby World Cup was contested in 1991, however the International Rugby Board did not officially support the event until the 1998 competition; by 2009, the IRB had retrospectively recognized the 1991 and 1994 competitions and their champions.

Currently, the tournament takes place every four years; the most recent one occurred in Ireland in 2017. The following competition was scheduled to take place in New Zealand in 2021, however it has been moved to 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since its inception, the women’s Rugby World Cup has been won by three different nations, with New Zealand setting a record with five victories. Previously, the competition was known as the Women’s Rugby World Cup. World Rugby announced in 2019 that the women’s championship would be promoted under the name Rugby World Cup, with no gender identification, starting in 2021 in an effort to create greater equity between the competition and its male counterpart, the Rugby World Cup.

HISTORY

There have been three prior competitions of a comparable sort before the first Women’s Rugby World Cup that was formally sanctioned by the International Rugby Board. The first of these took place in New Zealand in August 1990. The event was known as the Global Rugby Festival for Women despite not being a world championship. Teams from the United States, the Netherlands, Russia, and the hosts, New Zealand, competed in the event. New Zealand won after defeating the United States in the final.

Wales served as the host nation for the inaugural Women’s Rugby World Cup in 1991. Four groups of three included a total of twelve countries. Against all odds, the United States defeated England 19-6 to win the first championship. Spain lost to Canada 18-4 in the Plate competition. After the first tournament, it was decided to shorten the quadrennial cycle to just three years by moving the tournament schedule to the year before the following men’s world cup.

The following event was supposed to take place in Amsterdam, however it was ultimately shifted to Scotland. Eleven nations took part in the competition, and although the English faced the Americans in the final for the second time, England won this time.

The 1998 competition was the first women’s world cup that the International Rugby Board formally recognized. All of the games were played at the new National Rugby Centre in the west part of Amsterdam, which was originally slated to host the last world cup. A record-breaking sixteen teams competed in the tournament as well. Additionally competing was New Zealand, which withdrew from the last competition. New Zealand won the world cup for the first time by defeating the United States in the final.
