THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
The Open Championship, sometimes known as The Open or the British Open, is the oldest and most famous golf competition in the world. It was first hosted yearly at Scotland’s Prestwick Golf Club after being founded in 1860. Later, the location alternated among a small number of British seaside links golf courses. The R&A is in charge of planning it.
The Open is one of the four major golf competitions for men, the others being the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, and the Masters Tournament. Since the PGA Championship’s May 2019 date change, the Open has become the year’s fourth and last major competition. In mid-July, it takes place. The reason it is called The Open is that both professional and amateur golfers are theoretically welcome to participate. In reality, the present competition is a professional match in which a select group of elite amateurs also compete, either by invitation or qualification. Due to the competition’s success, there are now several open golf competitions held all over the world.
The current champion is Cameron Smith, who recorded a 268 to win the 150th Open at St. Andrews.
2022 Open Championship
The 2022 Open Championship, also known as the 150th Open Championship, was a golf competition held in St. Andrews, Scotland, from July 14–17.
With a score of 268, 20 under par, Cameron Smith won the competition, one stroke ahead of Cameron Young.
Organisation
The Open Title is run by the R&A and is included as a major championship on the schedules of the PGA Tour, European Tour, and Japan Golf Tour. The competition is a 72-hole (4 rounds), 18-hole stroke play competition that lasts 4 days. The first two days of play are spent in groups of three, while the remaining two days are spent in groups of two. The organizers will assign groups for the first two days, and each group will have a morning and an afternoon tee time. Players tee off on the final two days in reverse order of aggregate score, with the leaders going first. There was a cut after 36 holes, and the top 70 players and ties continued to play in the third and fourth rounds. After four rounds, if there is a tie for the lowest score, a four-hole aggregate playoff will be contested to decide the winner; if required, sudden-death extra holes will be played until a winner is determined.
Venue
The 30th Open Championship held at St. Andrews’ Old Course took place in 2022. Zach Johnson won the four-hole playoff for his second major championship in 2015, which was the most recent instance.
