SOUTH AMERICAN GAMES
The South American Games, formerly known as the Southern Cross Games (Spanish: Juegos Cruz del Sur), are a regional multi-sport competition held between countries from South America. It is put on by the South American Sports Organization (Organización Deportiva Sudamericana, or ODESUR).
In La Paz, Bolivia, the first Games were staged in 1978. Since then, they have been held every four years; the most recent being in Cochabamba, Bolivia, in 2018. Since the beginning of the Games, there has been a South American Flame, which is carried from Tiahuanaco, Bolivia, to the host city. Cochabamba, Bolivia, and Barquisimeto, Venezuela, both submitted bids for the XI edition in 2018, with Cochabamba winning the hosting selection in 2011. The South American Para Games are held for South American Paralympic competitors starting with the 2014 edition. The South American Games and Para-South American Games are both held in the same city, just like the Olympic Games.
A book written (in Spanish) by Argentinian journalist Ernesto Rodrguez III with assistance from the Argentine Olympic Committee and published under the auspices of the Ministry of Education in cooperation with the Sports Secretary of Argentina included a thorough history of the South American Games as well as a long list of medal winners.
