SUMMARY

Kabaddi is a contact team sport . Played between two teams of seven players, the objective of the game is for a single player on offence, referred to as a “raider”, to run into the opposing team’s half of a court, touch out as many of their defenders as possible, and return to their own half of the court, all without being tackled by the defenders, and in a single breath. Points are scored for each player tagged by the raider, while the opposing team earns a point for stopping the raider. Players are taken out of the game if they are touched or tackled, but are brought back in for each point scored by their team from a tag or tackle.

It is well-known throughout the Indian subcontinent and in neighboring Asian countries. Although kabaddi is mentioned in ancient Indian history, it was first popularized as a competitive sport in the twentieth century. It is Bangladesh’s national sport.  Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh compete in this state game.

“Punjabi kabaddi,” also known as “circle styles,” refers to traditional forms of the sport played on a circular field outdoors, whereas “standard style,” which is played on a rectangular court indoors, is the discipline played in major professional leagues and international competitions such as the Asian Games.

History of KABADDI

Kabaddi is an ancient, visceral, and muscular sport with roots dating back to primordial times. It has been mentioned in Hindu and Buddhist literature throughout the years.

The appeal of kabaddi rests in its simplicity, with only a few rules and straightforward combat between two teams in a demonstration of strength and speed.

The lights go up, the fans take their seats, and there’s a buzz, followed by quiet breathing and a desperate dash into the opponent’s lair.

The origins of kabaddi

Kabaddi is naturally an Indian sport. Kabaddi is said to have begun roughly 4,000 years ago in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. According to ancient writings, Krishna participated in the game, and the Buddha enjoyed seeing princes compete for the affections of their brides.
Kabaddi is a sport that allows young men to improve their physical strength, self-defense skills, reactivity, and speed.
The sport evolved over time in many places of India, but it was in the western state of Maharashtra in the early decades of the twentieth century that a standardised version of kabaddi was formed.

The development of the modern version of kabaddi

In 1923, the Hind Vijay Gymkhana held a national tournament in Baroda, and a written version of the kabaddi rules and regulations was published.
At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Kabaddi was featured. Adolf Hitler is said to have said, “Does your squad represent the typical Indian?” after being amazed by the maneuvers of the Hanuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal sports club’s two dozen players. The men had been dispatched to use their own sport to highlight India’s desire for freedom. Kabaddi made it to the Indian Olympic Games in Calcutta in 1938, and the sport gained international acclaim. The game would become an organized sport in independent India after British control ended in 1947. In 1950, the All-India Kabaddi Federation was established.
In 1955, the first men’s national tournament was conducted in what is now Chennai, while the first women’s competition was held in what is now Kolkata. Since 1961, the sport has been part of India’s educational curriculum

Rules of KABADDI

The game of Kabaddi is relatively simple to grasp. It is a seven-a-side game in which one player from each team sings “kabaddi…kabaddi…kabaddi…” and enters the opposing team’s half, attempting to touch at least one opposing player so that he can safely return to his own half. On the other hand, all seven players attempt to block that opponent player from returning to his half safely by grabbing him and holding him under their control until he passes out. If a player touches an opponent and returns to his half safely, not only is the player he touched out, but he can also bring a player from his own side back to life who had been out before him, just in case.
