EUROPEAN SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIP
Every four years, the European Championships, a multisport competition, bring together the current European Championships of some of the top sports on the continent. The first edition was held in 2018 between August 2 to August 12 in Berlin, Germany, and Glasgow, Scotland, the host cities. In 2022, the second edition will be held in Munich, Germany. This event has no bearing on the different Europe-wide championships in the same sports that are contested outside of this quadrennial framework (annually for cycling, gymnastics, rowing, and triathlon; biennially for athletics and aquatics).
HISTORY
In 2015, it was decided to organize the individual championships for European Athletics, European Natation League, European Cycling Union, FISA, and European Triathlon Union as a part of the European Championships. The individual championships will be organized by the various federations and the host cities using a coordinated schedule and a unified common brand. The European Athletics Championships, European Aquatics Championships, European Cycling Championships, European Rowing Championships, European Triathlon Championships, as well as the new European Golf Team Championships, will be among the competitions that are covered. On October 23, 2015, golf and gymnastics both formally joined the new competition.
The European Team Golf Championship was discontinued after one season, and the 2022 European Aquatics Championships were relocated to Rome, Italy, as part of announcements made by the European Tour and LEN prior to the release of the schedule for the second iteration of the combined European Championships. Munich 2022 released the final schedule of nine sports on June 18, 2020. Athletics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Rowing, and Triathlon made a comeback, while Beach Volleyball, Canoe Sprint, Sports Climbing, and Table Tennis were introduced as new sports. [36] However, the European Aquatics Championships will take place during the combined championships’ dates.
2022 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The second European Championships, scheduled to take place in Munich, Germany from August 11 to 21, will be held in 2022. Three days after the 2022 Commonwealth Games are over, on August 11, the event will start.
After participating in the first Championships in 2018, athletics, cycling, triathlon, artistic gymnastics, and rowing are back. Beach volleyball, canoe sprint, and, for the first time, a full schedule of para-sport events, Sport Climbing and Table Tennis, are all new to this year’s Championships. Swimming, diving, artistic swimming, and open water swimming will not be part of the event’s schedule, unlike the 2018 European Championships, as the 2022 European Aquatics Championships will take place at the same time in Rome, Italy. The European Golf Team Championships will not be held in golf in 2022.
